The most remarkable thing about DeRay McKesson is that he is just like us He s a former public school teacher whose life transformed the moment he decided to attend the Ferguson protests Because of this his knowledge and wisdom is not born out of privilege but experience So much nonfiction is the product of dissertation research or access to individuals and resources that enable powerful work But here McKesson unearths perception shifting truths purely through his honesty his observations his vulnerability and most of all his persistent pursuit of truth and justice On The Other Side of Freedom is part memoir part essay collection part community organizing manifesto It succeeds at all of these things at once thanks to McKesson s elouence and passion He cares deeply about what he writes about and he wants to kindle a fire in you At times he soars into the theoretical sharing high level reflections on concepts like hope power and justice But he anchors all of this in the tangible connecting them to his experiences fighting unethical policing structures in Balti witnessing homophobia in activism and meeting with both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton during their bids for the presidency Just like in his activism McKesson optimizes for accessibility without sacrificing artfulness The prose here is transcendent but digestible The chapters are organized neatly with McKesson s inviting narrative voice serving as the thread that unites his many feelings and ideas He is careful to be contemplative but never didactic The final product feels like a sermon for a religion we can all get behind one that loves us for who we are constantly reminds us of our value to the world and believes in us to be the best versions of ourselves especially at a time when these versions are most badly needed What a beautiful invigorating book
