I ve long been an admirer of Edith Schaeffer s books L Abri What is a family among them So I was fascinated to see Francis Schaeffer among the authors first of a trilogy of satirical novels about a preaching family Portofino is the first and now a straight autobiography that chronicles with some anger with much admiration with an admirable struggle for fairness the journey of the youngest child in this celebrated family to maturity and independence of thought and belief from a rigid Calvinism through times of confusion to the very different credal and liturgical Greek Orthodoxy disarmingly Francis Schaeffer admits he s not a very regular attender

Every excuse but no reasons Frank s gritty but unconvincing confessionalThis book is Frank Schaeffer s very personal often poignant sometimes impertinent explanation of why he has left evangelicalism Throughout a smattering of 65 vignettes he details the offences that have tripped him up his own unrelenting sex drive his parents glaring character flaws despite their strong faith their busyness in ministry to the neglect of young Frank and multiple evangelical leaders who used their message to gain power and money He admits writing from a memory deformed by time prejudice flawed recall and emotion But than a memoir the book reads like an unrepentant confession in defence of his abandonment of his parents faith Crassness and harsh cynicism alternate with poignant even lyrical portrayals of life making the book ultimately very readableBut it is a memoir built of excuses Despite all the very painful difficult and disillusioning details Frank fails to demonstrate any ualifying reasons for his rejection of the message of evangelicalism the good news that God has revealed to man in Scripture an escape route from the condemnation that sin deserves This escape is via faith in His Son Frank merely acknowledges Jesus as a good teacher that has influenced man s evolution toward goodnessWhile Frank has offered up many excuses for abandoning the faith of his father he has shown no reason to abandon the Truth his parents taught him than a marathon runner has for uitting just because some of his fellow runners are taking shortcuts doing jumping jacks on the sidelines or running the wrong directionLike a marathon the Christian life must be run with a view to the goal not the fellow runners or bystanders Becoming like Jesus is both process and prize We run by faith letting go present gratification for a future reward So what if others fail to run the race well Does this disualify us or disprove the reality of a God who rewards those who persist in seeking HimI read this book to gain insight into why kids growing up in strong Christian homes sometimes choose to abandon the faith of their parents Frank s frank often coarse honesty was helpful He judged his parents faith to be ineffectual based on their continuance in sinful habits despite their claiming to be saved from their sins His own struggle and capitulation to sexual temptation fueled rebellion rather than repentance just as did Adam and Eve s sin in the Garden They hid from God rather than confessing their sin to Him and rejoicing in His gracious offer of forgiveness He let his view of Christian leaders who failed distract and disillusion him from getting to know Jesus who never fails He himself succumbed to the lure of money and fame rather than owning up to who he was and wasn t His intellectual arrogance led him to deny the inerrancy and Authority of Scripture putting him on the slippery slope to skepticism cynicism and ultimately agnosticismBut ultimately these are stumbling stones not reasons Ultimately I suspect the reasons lie closer to the nature of us all We want to determine our own truth our own morality our own lives There s no room for Absolutes in this scheme of thinking not Scripture not God And in place of his father s strict adherence to the inerrant authority of Scripture Frank must resort to It seems to me to establish what is right and wrong a flimsy substitute for Divine revelation from The Omniscient CreatorAnd that is what this book is about Frank hashing over a lifetime of memories to demonstrate how they naturally lead to a debunking of evangelicalismI am not convinced I m following up this read with one by his father The Great Evangelical Disaster Perhaps the answer isn t in abandoning evangelicalism but in getting back to the parts that really matter to love the Lord our God to love his Son and to know him personally as our Saviour Francis Schaeffer
