I saw this book advertised in advance and was really looking forward to reading it upon its release However the book focusses heavily on the political climate leading up to April 1940 and the main political and military characters influencing events involved across Germany Britain and much of Scandinavia As such it takes a very long time to reach the stage where the battle of Narvik actually takes place in the narrative its covered in the final pages with a rather abrupt ending There is also an unfortunate photographic error as the book clearly shows a British Tribal class destroyer in the photo section described as a German destroyer under fire This photo also adorns the dust jacket tooCaptain Warburton Lee s flotilla had no Tribal class destroyers sailing in company they sortied a few days later during the second battle of Narvik which is not mentioned anywhere in this narrative This could be said to be an interesting book if you want to know about the military and political build up to the German invasion and the mood of the local people especially the military commanders on the spotThe author is Norwegian and he provides a good account as to the importance of the port of Narvik as a vital link in the supply chain of iron ore from Sweden that fuelled the German war industries

This is an excellently researched book by Alf Jacobsen I know because I spent eight years reseaching for my book on the same subject Attack at Dawn and next one Doomed Destroyer working title presently Alf s book supplements mine very well as he goes in depth regarding the political and military aspects of the lead up to the brutal invasion of Norway and the passive reaction of the government The book provides many personal accounts by members of all countries involved I hope he is able to write another book to supplement my second book by recording the military and political view point of the Second Battle and thereafter Well done Alf Jacobsen
